Google Free Listings Guide: Show Your Products on Google for Free

If your brand has its own website, Google can show your products to shoppers for free. Through Google Merchant Center, products can appear in the Shopping tab, search results, Google Images and more without paying for clicks. Many marketplace sellers never set it up. Here is how free listings work, what product data Google requires, and how to avoid the most common disapprovals.

What free listings are and where they appear

According to Google Merchant Center Help — Free listings, free listings let your products appear on Google at no cost, though showing is not guaranteed because Google matches products to searches using your data. Surfaces include:

  • Shopping tab on mobile and desktop.
  • Search rich results with price, availability and reviews.
  • Popular Products carousels for apparel and accessories (US, mobile).
  • Shopping Knowledge Panel, where strong identifiers like GTIN or MPN plus brand help.
  • Google Images and Lens product labels.
  • YouTube shoppable listings in some countries, plus Maps, Gemini and Business Profile modules.

New Merchant Center accounts are usually opted in automatically. You can check under Marketing methods, on the Free listings card; changing the setting requires Admin access.

Shipping and returns are not optional

Google requires shipping settings (in Merchant Center or via the shipping attribute) in 30 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Japan and Germany, and asks you to add return policy information, ideally in Merchant Center. Wrong shipping costs are a common reason for problems, so make sure your settings match your checkout.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Create a Google Merchant Center account for your business.
  2. Verify your website domain, since product links must use it.
  3. Set up shipping rates and delivery times that match your checkout.
  4. Add your return policy.
  5. Upload products by feed file, spreadsheet, API or an ecommerce platform integration.
  6. Fix any disapprovals in the Products section (missing GTIN, price mismatch, small images are typical).
  7. Confirm free listings are on under Marketing methods.
Price and availability on your site must match the feed. If you run promotions on your site, update the feed at the same time, or products can be disapproved during exactly the weeks you most want traffic.

Tips to get more visibility

  • Write titles for search. Put brand, product type and key attributes (size, color, material) in the first part of the title.
  • Use real GTINs. They help Google match your product in comparison surfaces such as the Knowledge Panel.
  • Add more images. Lifestyle and detail shots, up to 10 additional images.
  • Keep the feed fresh. Sync stock and prices daily, especially in Q4.
  • Collect reviews on your site, since rich results can show ratings.

Google keeps adding shopping features, such as Google Universal Cart, and they all start with a clean Merchant Center feed.

Free listings checklist

  3. All required attributes filled; GTINs added where available.
  4. Images at least 500 × 500 px before January 31, 2027.
  5. Free listings switched on; disapprovals reviewed weekly.
