Walmart Opens Its Store to AI Shopping Agents: What Sellers Should Do

AI assistants are starting to shop on behalf of customers, and Walmart has just set the rules for how they can do it on its site. On October 21, 2026, Walmart announced Agent Profiles, a new Walmart Agent Gateway for AI assistants, and terms that agents must follow. For Marketplace sellers, this changes who (or what) reads your listings before a customer buys.

What Walmart announced

  • Agent Profiles. Customers can give each AI agent its own profile in their Walmart account, track its purchases separately, and either approve every purchase or let it buy up to a limit. Walmart gave $50, $100 and $200 as example limits, according to Digital Commerce 360 (Oct 23, 2026). Profiles roll out "next month" and can be deleted at any time.
  • Walmart Agent Gateway. A direct connection that lets assistants such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Muse search products and complete purchases at Walmart and Sam's Club, Reuters reported (Oct 21, 2026). It is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and starts as a limited beta for companies and developers.
  • Rules for agents. Agents see the same prices as people, cannot access payment card data, cannot act beyond the shopper's instructions, and are blocked if they break the rules. Walmart's normal returns process applies, including when an agent doesn't do what was intended, per TechCrunch (Oct 21, 2026).
  • No membership needed. Agent support is open to anyone with a Walmart account; Walmart+ is not required (Reuters).

The contrast with Amazon

Amazon has sought to limit third-party AI shopping agents' access to its platform, Reuters notes, and TechCrunch reports that Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from making purchases for shoppers. Walmart is taking the opposite approach and inviting approved agents in. Mizuho analyst David Bellinger told Reuters that agentic purchasing is still "experimental," but that "the momentum and buy-in from top management teams seems to be making this into a real thing."

How ready are shoppers?

Early, but growing. In an NMI survey of 1,000 US adults in August 2026, cited by Digital Commerce 360, 11% said they had used AI to complete a transaction, 70% wanted to review or override an AI purchase before checkout, and only 10% would give AI full control.

Most respondents want a final say; Walmart Agent Profiles require customer approval by default.

Walmart has also said vitamin and protein supplements were the top two product types bought from Walmart through ChatGPT, according to comments by Walmart executive Daniel Danker reported by Digital Commerce 360.

What it means for sellers (our analysis)

Your catalog data is now your storefront. An AI agent doesn't look at your lifestyle image. It reads titles, attributes, prices, stock and delivery promises. Manish Joneja, who leads Walmart Global Marketplace, said accurate product information, competitive prices, availability and reliable delivery promises will matter more, and that Walmart is working with sellers on catalog quality so products are easier for AI to understand and recommend.

Spending limits favor clear value. With limits like $100, agents will handle many routine, repeat purchases first. Consumables, household basics and replenishment items are likely early winners; make sure your pack sizes and unit prices are easy to compare.

Returns still land on you. If an agent buys the wrong item, Walmart's normal returns process applies, so clear variant data (size, count, compatibility) protects your return rate.

Don't overreact yet. Profiles aren't live and the gateway is a beta. This is a signal to clean up data now, not a reason to change your whole strategy. Google is moving in a similar direction with Google Universal Cart.

Checklist for Walmart sellers

  1. Fill every required and recommended attribute for your top SKUs.
  2. Write titles that state brand, product type, size or count plainly.
  3. Keep inventory and prices synced so agents never see stale offers.
  4. Set accurate shipping templates and delivery promises.
  5. Check variant groups so agents can tell sizes and colors apart.
  6. Monitor returns for "wrong item" reasons after Agent Profiles launch.
