When Holiday Discounts Peak by Category: What Adobe's 2026 Data Shows
Adobe's headline holiday forecast, $275.1 billion in US online sales, got most of the attention last week; we covered it in our comparison of 2026 holiday forecasts. The full Adobe Digital Insights forecast deck goes further, with category-level data on when discounts peak, which products surge, and where traffic comes from. Here is the part sellers can actually plan with.
October is now the first act
Adobe expects US shoppers to spend $9.9 billion online during Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7, 2026), up 9.2% year over year, and $95.8 billion online across October, up 8%. It says October's spending lead over September has widened every year since 2022, from 9.4% to a projected 16.4% this year.
When each category's discounts peak
According to Adobe, discounts build from about 14% off in early November to 21% just before Thanksgiving and a season-high 30% during Cyber Week. Black Friday (November 27) is forecast to be the best day for five categories, while electronics reach the deepest single-category discount on Cyber Monday (November 30):
December discounts are expected to stay in the 10%–15% range.
What shoppers will stock up on
Adobe expects holiday sales to drive spending on everyday goods, not just gifts. Compared with normal levels, it forecasts these boosts:
| Category | October Prime event | Cyber Week |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing basics | +29% | +210% |
| Personal hygiene | +51% | +150% |
| Household cleaning | +54% | +49% |
Source: Adobe Digital Insights, Sept 2026. During the Cyber 5 period, Adobe forecasts sales of top subcategories rising more than 600% versus the January–August daily average, including vacuum cleaners (+930%), cookware (+860%), small kitchen appliances (+840%), headphones and speakers (+805%) and kids' toys (+760%).
Where the traffic comes from
- Social and affiliates grow, organic search shrinks. Adobe forecasts revenue share from social networks up 17% and affiliates/partners up 12% this season, paid search up 4%, and natural search down 13%.
- Creators matter inside affiliate. Influencer, creator and shoppable media drove 22% of affiliate visits from January to August 2026, with monthly share up 28% since January.
- AI shoppers convert. Adobe says AI-referred retail visitors converted 48% better than other traffic in August 2026, and forecasts AI-driven traffic up 130% over the season.
Adobe's press release and coverage by Forbes and Chain Store Age on September 28 confirm the headline figures; the category detail comes from the deck.
What it means for sellers (our analysis)
- Match your deal calendar to your category. If you sell toys, apparel or appliances, Black Friday is the day shoppers expect the best price. Electronics sellers should plan their deepest offer for Cyber Monday.
- Essentials sellers have two peaks. Cleaning and hygiene products get a strong lift in October, not just in Cyber Week. Make sure stock is in place for both.
- Small appliances and cookware are crowded but huge. Expect heavy competition and higher ad costs in Cyber 5; lock in budgets and inventory early.
- Diversify traffic. With organic search share falling, creator programs and affiliate partnerships are worth testing before peak, not during it.
Checklist for the next 8 weeks
- Map each SKU's category to Adobe's peak-discount day and plan your deepest offer for that date.
- Set a discount ladder: modest early-November deals, bigger before Thanksgiving, best price in Cyber Week.
- Check inventory for October essentials demand and Cyber 5 surges.
- Line up creators and affiliate partners in October.
- Make product data complete so AI shopping assistants can surface your listings.
Tip: Forecast discount levels are market averages. Price from your own margin first, then decide how close to the category peak you can afford to go.
