Amazon Adds LTL Freight Labels, Walmart Builds Bulky Hub: What It Means for Big-Item Sellers

Heavy and bulky products, such as furniture, fitness equipment and large appliances, are some of the hardest items to sell online profitably. In the past week, both Amazon and Walmart announced moves aimed at exactly this segment. For sellers of big items, especially those who ship from their own US warehouse, this changes the options for Q4 and 2027.

What Amazon announced

According to Supply Chain Dive's report of September 30, 2026 (via Yahoo Finance), Amazon announced at its Accelerate conference:

  • LTL labels in Buy Shipping (October 2026). Merchant-fulfilled sellers can buy less-than-truckload (LTL) freight labels through Amazon Buy Shipping in Seller Central and third-party shipping software. Amazon VP Ripley MacDonald said this means "lower label costs, with fewer disputes eating into your margins."
  • Regional delivery pricing (early 2027). Sellers will be able to set delivery fees by region for heavy and bulky items.
  • Local carriers (early 2027). Amazon will connect sellers with local carriers offering same-day or next-day delivery within 100 miles of their warehouse.
  • Seller Flex for heavy and bulky. Through this invite-only program, Amazon handles warehouse pickup, in-home delivery, installation and returns. Amazon says sellers using it see "more than 2.5 times the sales" of those shipping independently.

EcomCrew (Oct 1, 2026) adds a caution: LTL quotes may not include accessorials such as liftgate, residential delivery, appointments or inside delivery.

What Walmart announced

On September 28, 2026, Walmart announced plans to invest more than $300 million in a fulfillment center in Turtlecreek Township, Ohio, near Cincinnati, creating more than 300 jobs, according to JobsOhio and Supply Chain Dive. The site will specialize in larger, non-sortable items such as televisions and furniture, supporting Walmart's next-day delivery network.

What it means for sellers (our analysis)

  • Freight becomes a marketplace feature. Buying LTL inside Seller Central simplifies bulky FBM orders and may reduce delivery disputes, but you should compare total landed cost, including accessorials, with your current freight broker.
  • Regional pricing helps far-away orders. Bulky items shipped across the country often lose money. Charging by region could make more ZIP codes profitable from 2027.
  • Delivery speed for big items is the next battleground. Walmart's investment and Amazon's local-carrier plan show that faster delivery of furniture and TVs is a priority. Sellers with inventory in the right region will be favored.
  • Know your freight class. LTL pricing depends on freight class, which since July 2025 depends more heavily on density. See our LTL freight class guide.

What to do now

  1. List your heavy and bulky SKUs with dimensions, weight and current shipping cost per order.
  2. Test Amazon Buy Shipping LTL on 5–10 representative orders and compare full costs, including accessorials.
  3. Map where your bulky orders go; identify regions where shipping wipes out margin.
  4. Ask your Amazon account manager about Seller Flex eligibility if you ship heavy items in volume.
  5. Review packaging to reduce dimensions or improve density before peak season.
Tip: For bulky items, always ask a freight quote to list liftgate, residential and appointment fees separately. These extras often decide whether an order is profitable.
