Walmart Marketplace Referral Fees: Rates, Tiers and Examples

Walmart Marketplace Referral Fees: Rates, Tiers and Examples

Walmart Marketplace has no setup or monthly subscription fee; instead it takes a referral fee on every sale. The rate depends on the category you choose during item setup, and for many categories it also depends on the price. Get the category or price band wrong and your margin math is off. This guide explains how Walmart's referral fees work, with the official rates and worked examples.

How the referral fee works

According to Walmart's referral fee page (accessed October 15, 2026):

  • Charged only when you sell. "These fees are only deducted once you complete a sale," and Walmart states "zero setup, monthly, or hidden fees."
  • Based on the total sales price. "Total sales price includes item price as well as shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges."
  • Set by category and product type. "Referral fees vary based on the category and product type you choose during item setup."

Fulfillment costs are separate: if you use Walmart Fulfillment Services, see our WFS fees guide.

Two kinds of tiers: price bands and portions

Walmart uses two different tier structures, and they work differently:

  • Price bands (Apparel, Beauty, Baby, Grocery): the whole sale gets one rate based on the total price. A $14.99 shirt pays 5%; the same shirt at $20.99 pays 15% of the entire price.
  • Portions (Electronics Accessories, Furniture, Jewelry, Watches and others): each part of the price is charged at its own rate, like tax brackets. The effective rate falls as the price rises.

Here is how the effective referral fee looks for some sample prices:

Walmart referral fee as % of sale: examples
Apparel uses price bands (the whole price falls in one band). Electronics accessories: 15% of first $100 + 8% of $50 = $19. Furniture: 15% of $200 + 10% of $300 = $60. Jewelry: 20% of $250 + 5% of $150 = $57.50.

Calculation: apparel at $12 = 5% ($0.60), $18 = 10% ($1.80), $30 = 15% ($4.50). Electronics accessories at $150 = 15% × $100 + 8% × $50 = $19 (12.7%). Furniture at $500 = 15% × $200 + 10% × $300 = $60 (12%). Jewelry at $400 = 20% × $250 + 5% × $150 = $57.50 (14.4%).

How to use this in pricing

Watch the band edges

In price-band categories, crossing a threshold changes the fee on the whole price. An apparel item at $15.00 pays $0.75; at $15.50 it pays $1.55. Make sure a small price increase, or adding shipping charges (which count toward the total price), doesn't push you into a higher band and cancel out the gain.

Choose the correct category

The fee follows the category and product type you choose at item setup. Choose the one that accurately describes the product; Walmart can review and correct categories, and the wrong one can affect fees and how shoppers find your item.

Bundle to change the math

For low-priced items in band categories, a bundle at a higher price may pay a higher rate. Run the numbers both ways, including fulfillment costs, before you decide.

Build a fee line into every SKU

Your SKU margin sheet should show price, referral fee, fulfillment cost, ad cost and returns. Recalculate whenever you change price or join a deal event.

Checklist

  1. Confirm the category and product type of each listing in Seller Center.
  2. Look up the current rate and tier type for each category.
  3. Flag SKUs priced near a band threshold (for example $10, $15 or $20).
  4. Include shipping charges in the total price when calculating the fee.
  5. Recheck fees before deal events and price changes.
