Walmart Marketplace Returns Policy: A Seller Guide for 2026
Returns are where many new Walmart Marketplace sellers get surprised. Walmart sets the rules, not you: the return window, who pays shipping, whether you can charge a restocking fee, and even whether a Walmart store takes the item back on your behalf. With holiday orders arriving now, here is how Walmart's returns policy for seller-fulfilled orders works, based on the official policy last updated August 31, 2026.
The core rules at a glance
According to Walmart Marketplace Learn — Returns policy (updated Aug 31, 2026), sellers must accept eligible returns regardless of the reason or the item's condition, except for items set up with an approved exemption (for example Final Sale items).
| Rule | What Walmart requires |
|---|---|
| Minimum return window | 30 days, starting 7 days after the ship date |
| Holiday returns | Most items bought Oct 1 – Dec 31 returnable until Jan 31 (exceptions include wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, food and beverages, select seasonal and luxury goods) |
| Return shipping charged to customer | Not allowed |
| Restocking fee | Not allowed, except up to 20% of item price for exempt items not returned in original or sellable condition |
| Return label for exempt items | Seller must provide it within 48 hours |
| Refund timing (Walmart.com / Customer Care) | When the carrier first scans the return |
| Refund timing (in store) | When the store receives the item |

The holiday window matters right now
Because most items bought from October 1 to December 31 can be returned until January 31, an order shipped on October 2 may come back almost four months later. Plan for a longer tail of returns in January, and don't count Q4 revenue as final until February.
Return labels: RSS or your own carrier account
By default, Walmart generates return labels through its Returns Shipping Service (RSS), which offers discounted return rates. According to the Walmart RSS policy (updated Dec 11, 2025), your business is the shipper of record, Walmart picks the carrier (the policy names FedEx and USPS), and Walmart is not liable for loss or damage to RSS packages. If a return is lost, you file the claim with the carrier yourself; see our guide on how to file a USPS claim. You can also use your own FedEx or UPS account for return labels.
Either way, you need a valid US return address (not a PO box, and not in Hawaii, Alaska or US territories) and at least one active return center. If the address is invalid, packages may be rerouted, and you pay the resulting charges.
In-store returns
Walmart stores accept eligible Marketplace items on your behalf, which customers like and which you can't opt out of for normal items. Items that need a return exemption are not eligible for in-store returns, including odd-sized, freight-shipped, oversized, heavy and luxury items, major appliances and fully regulated hazardous materials. If one of these is returned in store anyway, the policy says the seller bears the costs.
Keep It and returnless refunds
For low-value or bulky items that aren't worth shipping back, you can set up Keep It rules so the customer is refunded and keeps the item. This saves return shipping but you still lose the sale, so use it for items where the label costs more than the item is worth to you.
What you must not do
- Negotiate with customers, or discourage or delay an eligible return.
- Offer alternative solutions (partial refunds, discounts to keep the item) unless Walmart explicitly authorizes them.
- Charge return shipping or unapproved restocking fees.
If you don't comply, Walmart may refund the customer on your behalf and charge you, and can suspend or terminate sellers. Returns also feed into your performance: Walmart's seller performance standards include a return rate target, covered in our Walmart seller performance standards guide.
Returns checklist for Walmart sellers
- Set a valid US return address and at least one active return center in Seller Center.
- Decide between RSS and your own FedEx or UPS account for return labels.
- Apply for exemptions for freight, multi-box or luxury items, and be ready to send labels within 48 hours.
- Set up Keep It rules for low-value items where return shipping isn't worth it.
- Inspect returns quickly and restock sellable units.
- Budget for holiday returns arriving through January 31.
- Track your return rate weekly and fix listing, sizing or quality problems behind it.
Most high return rates start with the listing. Clear size charts, accurate photos and honest specs prevent more returns than any policy setting.
