2026 Peak Season Surcharges Start This Weekend: UPS, FedEx and USPS

2026 Peak Season Surcharges Start This Weekend: UPS, FedEx and USPS

Holiday shipping costs start climbing this weekend. UPS's first 2026 peak charges begin on September 27, FedEx's on September 28, and USPS's temporary holiday prices on October 4, and every carrier is charging more per package than last year. If you ship to US homes, your Q4 margin math needs updating now, not in December.

What the carriers announced

USPS: temporary holiday prices from Oct 4

On August 25, 2026, the U.S. Postal Service announced a temporary price change for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, in effect from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027. Retail Dive reported the increase averages about 6%. According to FP, a postage-meter provider, the Postal Regulatory Commission approved the change on September 9, 2026. First-Class Mail and international products are not included.

UPS: phases from Sept 27

According to Supply Chain Dive (Aug 27, 2026), UPS's demand surcharges on Additional Handling, Large Package and Over Maximum Limits start on September 27; surcharges on Ground Residential, Air and Ground Saver start on October 25; the highest rates apply November 22 to December 26; and the program ends January 16, 2027. Value Added Resource and Reveel list the Ground Residential surcharge at $0.50 in the shoulder periods and $0.75 at the peak, up from $0.60 at last year's peak.

FedEx: phases from Sept 28

Supply Chain Dive (Jul 23, 2026) reported that FedEx's Ground Residential peak surcharge rises to $0.80 per package from $0.65 in 2025, about 23% higher. Charges on Additional Handling, Oversize and unauthorized packages start September 28; most residential surcharges start October 26; the highest rates apply November 23 to December 27; and the program runs to January 17, 2027. Reveel lists Ground Economy at $2.55 in the shoulder periods and $4.05 at the peak.

What it means for sellers (our analysis)

  • Residential is where it hurts. Most marketplace orders go to homes. A $0.75–$0.80 surcharge on a $10 label is a 7–8% cost increase on that shipment, before any oversize or handling charge.
  • Big and awkward boxes cost the most. The oversize and additional-handling charges start first, in late September, and are much larger per package than the residential fee. Review your packaging for bulky SKUs now.
  • USPS is no longer a free pass. Lightweight Ground Advantage parcels still see the smallest increases, but heavier parcels to far zones rise by several dollars.
  • Your rates may differ. Contract shippers, marketplace-purchased labels and third-party label platforms can have different surcharge terms. Check your own agreement.

Checklist: what to do this week

  1. Pull your last Q4 shipping data by carrier, service, zone and weight, and apply this year's surcharges to estimate the new cost per order.
  2. Re-price or set a free-shipping threshold for low-price SKUs where the surcharge wipes out the margin.
  3. Right-size boxes for anything close to the oversize or additional-handling limits, and recheck dimensional weight.
  4. Move inventory closer to customers (FBA, WFS or a regional 3PL) before mid-November, so more orders ship to near zones.
  5. Compare carriers per lane. Regional last-mile carriers may not add the same peak charges; ask for their Q4 terms in writing.
  6. Set customer expectations with clear holiday cut-off dates on your listings and store.
Tip: Surcharges are charged per package. Combining multi-unit orders into one box, or offering bundles, reduces how many times you pay them.
