FedEx 2027 Rate Increase: 5.9% Headline, Bigger Hikes for Small Parcels

FedEx 2027 Rate Increase: 5.9% Headline, Bigger Hikes for Small Parcels

FedEx has set its 2027 prices: list rates rise by an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027. It is the same headline number as the last few years, but analysts say lightweight e-commerce parcels and several surcharges go up by more. If you ship to US customers, now is the time to re-check your 2027 shipping budget and carrier mix.

What FedEx announced

  • Headline increase. According to Logistics Management, FedEx announced on September 22, 2026 that US, export and import list rates will rise by an average of 5.9% from January 4, 2027. Ground Economy, Ground Multiweight, International Premium and International Priority DirectDistribution also change.
  • Fourth year at 5.9%. CEP Research (Sept 22, 2026) and The Loadstar both note this is the fourth consecutive year FedEx has announced a 5.9% average increase.
  • New paper fees. CEP Research reports that from January 18, 2027, FedEx will add a $25 per shipment fee for non-electronic trade documents and a $5 fee for paper air waybills.

Where the increase is bigger than 5.9%

The Loadstar, citing analysis by Paul Yaussy of logistics data platform Loop, reports that lightweight parcels of 1–5 lb face about 6.49%, the steepest of the weight brackets, and that five of seven major services exceed the headline. Logistics Management lists Ground delivery area surcharges up 8.11% and extended delivery area surcharges up 9.09%:

Minimum charges also rise. Yaussy told The Loadstar that "minimum charges apply regardless of negotiated discounts," which can erode the discounts that lightweight shippers negotiated. Dave Sullivan of ShipScience told Logistics Management: "Budget from your shipping profile and not the 5.9% headline."

What we don't know yet

At the time of writing, the reports we reviewed did not include UPS's 2027 general rate increase or USPS's January 2027 prices. Fuel surcharges are also set separately and change weekly, so they can move your total cost up or down independently of the GRI. Contract terms differ widely: two sellers with the same volume can see very different 2027 increases depending on their negotiated discounts and minimums. We will cover other carriers' 2027 changes once they are confirmed.

What it means for sellers (our analysis)

  • Small parcels pay the most. Most marketplace orders are under 5 lb, exactly where the increase is steepest. Expect your real increase to be above 5.9% if you ship lots of small residential parcels.
  • Rural and bulky orders get more expensive. Delivery-area and oversize surcharges rise faster than base rates. Know which share of your orders go to remote ZIP codes or exceed size limits.
  • Discounts are worth less. A higher minimum charge can cancel part of a negotiated discount on light packages.
  • UPS and USPS matter too. Carriers often move in a similar direction. Watch for other 2027 announcements before you commit volume.

Checklist before January 4

  1. Re-rate last year's shipments with 2027 prices, or ask your carrier rep or label platform to do it, so you see your real increase.
  2. Split by weight and zone. Find where the bulk of your cost sits: 1–5 lb, far zones, remote ZIP codes, oversize.
  3. Fix packaging. Smaller boxes can avoid dimensional-weight charges and handling surcharges.
  4. Compare regional carriers and USPS for lightweight residential parcels.
  5. Renegotiate minimum charges and surcharge discounts, not only the base rate discount.
  6. Update shipping prices and free-shipping thresholds on your store and listings for 2027.
Tip: Ask any carrier or label provider for a re-rate using your own shipment file. A headline percentage cannot tell you what your mix of weights and zones will cost.
