Amazon to Hire 300,000+ for the Holidays: What It Signals for Sellers
Amazon is hiring more people for the holidays than at any time in the past three years. On October 20, 2026, Amazon said it plans to hire more than 300,000 workers across its US operations network for the holiday season, up from a 250,000 target in each of the previous three years. For sellers, more warehouse and delivery staff usually means Amazon expects higher order volumes. Here is what was announced and what it means for your Q4.
What Amazon announced
- Over 300,000 roles. Seasonal, part-time and full-time roles across Amazon's US core operations network, with new openings posted weekly from October through December, according to FOX 9 / FOX Business (Oct 20, 2026).
- First increase in three years. FOX Business, citing Reuters, called it Amazon's first increase in holiday recruitment in three years. PPC Land (Oct 21, 2026) notes the 250,000 target applied to each of the previous three seasons.
- Pay. Seasonal workers average about $20 an hour; full-time operations roles start at a minimum of $20; average hourly pay across core operations is nearly $24.
- Healthcare from day one. From January 1, 2027, seasonal employees working at least 30 hours a week become eligible for healthcare from their first day, with plans starting at $5 a week.
PPC Land points out that the 2025 target was described as "up to" 250,000 and the 2026 one as "over" 300,000, and that scope descriptions may differ, so the roughly 20% increase is an approximation.
The wider holiday picture
Amazon's plan sits alongside retail-wide expectations. The National Retail Federation expects retailers to hire 325,000 to 375,000 temporary workers this season, compared with an estimated 356,000 in 2025, and forecasts November–December sales up 4.2% to $1.013 trillion, according to Chain Drug Review (Oct 15, 2026). Note that NRF's figure covers retailers broadly and is not directly comparable with Amazon's operations hiring. For more on the forecast, see our NRF holiday forecast article.

What it means for sellers (our analysis)
Amazon is planning for more volume. Companies don't add 50,000 roles unless they expect to need them. Expect strong traffic around Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30), and plan inventory accordingly.
Capacity helps, but deadlines still matter. More staff can speed up receiving and delivery, but peak-season FBA check-in can still slow down. Ship inventory early rather than counting on faster processing, and watch your inbound shipment status closely.
Faster delivery raises the bar. If Amazon keeps Prime delivery fast through December, seller-fulfilled offers will be compared against that. Check your handling times and carrier cutoffs; see our 2026 holiday shipping deadlines guide.
Costs are rising too. Higher wages are part of why fulfillment fees and peak surcharges keep climbing. Recheck your Q4 margins with current FBA fees and peak surcharges included.
Plan for returns as well. Higher December volume means more January returns, especially with Amazon's extended holiday return window. Keep budget and storage space for returned stock; see our Amazon holiday returns guide.
Checklist for Q4
- Confirm all FBA inventory for Black Friday week is shipped or in transit.
- Track inbound shipments daily and resolve problems quickly.
- Set realistic handling times for seller-fulfilled orders.
- Recalculate margins with peak fees for every promoted SKU.
- Plan a restock order for December based on November sell-through.
